Malawi task force ships third container
Malawi task force ships third container

As members of Olympia Presbytery, you all can be proud of our ongoing partnership activity with the Synod of Livingstonia in Malawi.  In the three years of our formal partnership we have sent thirty volunteers to teach and to provide critical assistance in the development of the University of Livingstonia.  Right now we have two representatives on the faculty, and a number of presbytery folks interested in mission trips and teaching experiences.  And, as you know, we have hosted several Malawians here, including the six-month visit of Rev. Matiya and Mariya Nkhoma last year.  More ambassador exchanges are being planned.

The current great excitement is the shipment of our third large container of donated goods to support the further development of the University.  Many of our churches and friends, including several colleges and businesses, have generously given a vast array of vital supplies and equipment that are needed at Livingstonia and will support development of “our” five colleges: Education, Technology, Nursing, Commerce and Theology.

Here is a sample of what we are sending: Underutilized donated science equipment will support the development of science laboratories with items such as 50 microscopes, printers, and physics, biology and chemistry equipment. The computer center will be developed and improved through the donation of 21 computers, a generator and air-conditioning unit, and two servers.Tools, paint, a long extension ladder, fire extinguishers and equipment such as six used diesel engines, transmissions and sewing machines will support Technical College programs and maintenance of facilities.Books for each of the colleges will update and add to their respective libraries.Furniture, household goods, and kitchen equipment will improve living facilities for faculty, students, and volunteers.

A significant portion of the goods will be used to support the development of early childhood education, primary schools and secondary schools in Livingstonia and the surrounding area.  For these targeted areas, the container includes over 150 different boxes and tubs that are filled with schools supplies, teacher training materials, teaching/learning materials, math textbooks, books, microscopes, science materials, storage containers, chairs and easels for preschool children.

In addition, Girl Guides, Brownies and the Women's Guild will be supported with yarn, fabric and needles so that the women and girls will be able to learn how to make things for their families.  We also have items that have been contributed to support orphans in the Livingstonia community.  Hospital supplies and medical equipment will help sustain the nursing program and the hospital.

This is truly a moment to celebrate the mission connection we have with our wonderful friends and partners in Malawi.  You, Olympia Presbytery, are making a real difference in hundreds of lives, as well as helping lift this little African nation out of poverty.
