The Bible and Abolition

Modern-day abolition is a movement towards dismantling institutions and systems like prisons, jails, detention centers, etc. that do not lead to community thriving. It is also a movement to build a society without prisons, proposing different means to support collective thriving and more effective ways to address harms.

For the Christians involved with Presbyterians for Abolition, their work in this area stems directly from Jesus' own calling "to proclaim good news to the poor ... to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4).
